Steampunk!AU of the Hobbit.
So like, we came up with this story where Smaug is a mechanical beast that expels smog, once created to serve the dwarves of Erebor but now has gone beserk, steadily killing the city of Dale with this toxins and running out all the dwarves.
Bilbo Baggins is born with a one-of-a-kind gift with the ability to create steam, an ingredient that has proven to be more clean, efficient and much desired way of living among machines than coal could provide. However, Bilbo Baggins lives in secrecy of his power, he fears it. His hands can harm anyone and anything he dares to touch. He can make a machine dance with a brush of his hand. He is forced to wear gloves for most of his life and knows not the touch of another. When Gandalf comes for they need his help to turn Smaug's smog into steam, he initially refuses the company in fear.
Then, in a surge of impulsive action, Bilbo decides to come along. After all, if his much undesired power could save people, why shouldn't he go?
Word gets out that a hobbit with the miraculous ability to create steam stretches throughout steampunk!Middle-Earth, avaricious eyes fix themselves at the possibility of an infinite steam maker. The possibilities! Endless factory workings, mass production could easily done. Bilbo Baggins finds himself exposed in the line of sight of greedy industrial monopolizers.
---headcanons we made up in livestream---
-Someone also had this headcanon where Thorin tries to save Bilbo from falling (think stone giants situation) but when he touches him he gets scalded but refuses to let go despite Bilbo's protests. (
it hurts me
-Another one said that Bilbo can't tend to his garden without gloves because his steam kills the plants (
this hurts me as well
